Requiem for Locusts
***Coming November 2008***
by W. Parciak
"I am scattered into a million pieces. Little pieces of sand or glass. Sharp-edged knives or swords, like the ones daddy plays with. They won't let me but when I close my hands I cut myself anyway. Sharp-edged words and eyes, I try to hide from them but cannot." These are the words of Marzita Zaferatos, a mentally-ill young woman who wanders into the lives of her neighbors on Locust Street, whether they want her to or not. On the street live a frail spinster, a career-driven couple and their toddler, a neurologist with a constricting shyness of women, a teenager who wishes her life could be as interesting as her daydreams, and Marzita's father, a circus juggler. These residents are scarcely aware of each other's existence, guarding their private lives behind doors and fences. But Marzita doesn't understand that only superficial contact is customary in the close confines of a city. Sometimes unwillingly, her neighbors are caught up in her delusional, fairytale vision of life with princes and princesses, evil dukes, malevolent knives, circus stars and music, as her world spins out of control and the boundary between insanity and reality unravels.

The Truth
by G Rips
In his debut novel, The Truth, Geoff Rips creates a moral universe in a series of tales narrated by the palsied hunchback Chuy Pingarrón who spends his days on the front porch of a San Antonio whorehouse and is proud to dubbed "the standard of perversion" by those whose stories he tells. Through his twisted perspective we meet the Midwife who is also the house's madam, the philosopher Don Apolo who lives in an iron lung, and Angelita, famous for her hands. Chuy relates the sad story of the impenetrable Soledad, deemed by her mother to be a saint; of la Ramona, whose one eye looks into your soul while the other looks away; and of the enigmatic la Verdad, whose customers seek her out to learn their fortunes. At turns comic and tragic, Chuy's story meditates on the most ancient questions: how do you live a life and what does it mean? Winner of the 2006 AWP Award for the Novel.

The Unraveling Thread
by P Cogan
The Unraveling Thread, to be released June 1, 2008, tells the story of a family exploding in crisis. Harriet McWhinnie, a divorced but successful career woman, arrives home to discover that yet another Agency person has fled, leaving behind Harriet’s sweet but demented mother, her adolescent twin girls, one psychotic with an undiagnosed genetic disorder, the other rebellious and resentful of her disabled sibling, a little five year old boy yearning for the return of his father, and an hyperactive dog who drives everyone crazy. Desperate, Harriet hires a middle-aged,Native American woman, Agatha, with no references, noaddress, and a past steeped in mystery. Stern but loving, Agatha forces each family member to work through their issues with honesty and dignity while hiding from her own grief. In the end, the story’s memorable characters each learn how to pick up the threads of both love and self respect that will pull them out into the harsh world and then lead them back home.
This story is the first time that the relatively common, but severely under-diagnosed chromosomal disorder, Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome, has ever appeared in fiction. Atypical of Dr. Cogan’s previous novels, the clash of the Anglo and Native American cultures casts a different light on the issues facing many American families. The story of a career woman, caught in the sandwich generation, taking care of both her parent and her children, is one that will resonate with many readers, as will the story of a family overwhelmed with medical problems. It is the kind of page-turning novel which will tug on the reader’s heart.

Conquer Back and Neck Pain: Walk It Off! A Spine Doctor's Proven Solutions for Finding Relief Without Pills or Surgery
by M Brown
Renowned spine surgeon Dr. Mark Brown, MD, PhD, explains exactly what causes back pain and why humans are so predisposed to spinal problems. He provides a detailed questionnaire that allows you to identify which of seven types of back pain you are experiencing, and then he explains each of those types in clear and easy-to-understand language. Contrary to what you might expect from a spinal surgeon, Dr. Brown actually advocates against turning to surgery in most cases of spinal pain. In his 35 years of experience, he has found that the vast majority of back pain cases will resolve with minimal treatment. In fact, the very best thing you can do is to simply allow your body to heal itself by avoiding the many treatment pitfalls that people with back pain commonly fall into when looking for relief. Avoiding these mistakes, along with incorporating gentle aerobic exercise, will almost always allow you to “walk off” your back or neck pain naturally.

American Secret Projects: Fighters & Interceptors
by T Buttler
Throughout aviation history there have been many aircraft designs that have failed to progress beyond the drawing board for a variety of reasons. The aircraft that have taken to the skies represent only a small percentage of those that were planned.
This latest title in the highly successful ‘Secret Projects’ series is also the first to deal with United States aircraft. Compiled by Tony Buttler, who has been researching the subject for many years, this book examines the great variety of U.S. fighter designs between the end of World War II and the period immediately after the USA’s withdrawal from Vietnam.
The book covers the immediate postwar designs of subsonic aircraft for both the USAF and USN, U.S. supersonic designs, the U.S. Vertical Take Off and Landing program, and the competitions that ultimately led to the development of iconic aircraft such as the F-14 Tomcat.

American Secret Pusher Fighters of WWII: XP-54, XP-55, and XP-56
by G Balzer
American Secret Pusher Fighters of World War II analyzes the state of military aircraft procurement just prior to the start of World War II. It provides insight into the difficulties encountered by America's air services in dealing with an isolationist Congress and a limited mindset in the Army, which was seemingly indifferent to the aeronautical progress being made in Europe by the British and Germans. The book then focuses on the three winners of the 1940 fighter competition - the Vultee XP-54, the Curtiss XP-55, and the Northrop XP-56. These radical designs ("Pusher" referred to having the engine in the back) used non-strategic materials and were developed in secret. At the time, the aerodynamics of these aircraft far outpaced engine development. In addition, this book details the technical difficulties of mating an advanced aircraft design with inadequate engine development.

Aufklarer Volume 2
by D Wadman
Concluding the story of the Luftwaffe’s reconnaissance units, this book covers the period from 1942 to end of the war. As the tide of the war turned against Germany, information obtained from Aufklärungsflieger became ever more vital to both the German High Command and local-level ground commanders. Beginning in 1943, new purpose-built aircraft were introduced to deal with the increasing territory range needing coverage on the Russian Front. Among aircraft discussed are the Fw 189, Ar 240, Bv 141, and operations conducted by the Fi 156, Bf 109, and Fw 190-equipped Aufklärungsflieger units. The book covers the development of long-range reconnaissance including operations over Russia, the Mediterranean, and Europe using the Bf 110, Me 410, Ju 88, He 111, Ju 188, and Fw 200. Also discussed is the role of high-altitude reconnaissance using the lesser-known Ju 86 and Hs 130, which were fitted with experimental pressurized compartments. The reconnaissance work of pioneering jet aircraft, Me 262 and Ar 234 is included as is the role of ultra long-range machines such as the six-engined Ju 290, (used for co-operation with the U-boats) and the Me 264 Amerika bomber.

Avro Lancaster: The Bomber that Won the War
by P Smith
The Avro Lancaster is one of the most well known and revered aircraft in aviation history. The RAF's heavy bomber was developed during the early years of World War 2 when Britain's only means of taking the offensive to Germany was through the Royal Air Force's strategic night-bombing campaign. The first Lancaster mission was in 1942, and the aircraft was an instant success. Powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, its performance outstripped its rivals. By the end of the war, the aircraft had carried out 156,000 missions and dropped over 600,000 tons of high-explosive bombs and more than 51 million incendiary bombs. Its versatility was such that it excelled also in many other roles, including daylight precision bombing. Some of its raids have passed into folklore the 1943 'Dambusters' raid on dams in the Ruhr area of Germany delivering the unique bouncing bombs designed by Barnes Wallace is probably the most famous. Nineteen Lancasters took part in this raid in May 1943, and eight planes were lost. The 1,000-bomber raid on Cologne led by Bomber Harris and the sinking of the Tirpitz when it was holed up in a Norwegian fjord using 5-ton Tallboy bombs were also key Lancaster raids which changed the course of the war. In total, 7,377 Lancasters were built, the last in December 1945, and although the rapid advance of aviation technology meant that the Lancaster was quickly superseded by the first generation of jet bombers (including the Avro Vulcan), it was still in use with the Canadians in the early 1960s on photo-reconnaissance and maritime patrol, search, and rescue duties. Comprehensively illustrated throughout with a stunning collection of black and white and color photographs, this book will be entertaining reading not only for aviation enthusiasts, but for all who know the legend of the Lancaster bomber in Britain's wartime history.

The Avro Vulcan : Britain's Cold War Warrior
by Y Gordon & D Komissarov
The Vulcan was the most famous of the three types of V- Bombers. Along with the Victor and the Valiant V-Bombers, the Vulcan helped maintain Britain's strategic nuclear deterrent during the early years of the Cold War. Initially finished in an all-over white color scheme to protect the aircraft and their crews from the heat and flash of a nuclear explosion, the V-Force's aircraft could be scrambled in minutes in response to any Soviet attack. V-Bombers and their crews stood on constant alert until 1969 when the V- Force handed over its nuclear deterrent role to the Royal Navy's Polaris submarines.

Bagration to Berlin: The Final Air Battles in the East 1944-1945
by C Bergström
Written by a leading expert in World War II air operations on the Eastern Front, this is the last in a quartet of books that together give total coverage of air battles in this theatre of war from 1941 to 1945. It details the final phase of air operations in the East from late 1943, and then covers the German defensive operations around the River Dnepr and the Sea of Azov in September 1943, and the subsequent German retreat and the air bridge to Cherkassy in early 1944. Final coverage is given to the major Soviet offensive against the Army Group Centre in mid-1944, the fall of Romania and the autumn battles in Poland, Courland, and on the Vistula, ending with the major Soviet winter offensive of early 1945 and the last-ditch battles over Berlin itself. The author's writing provides fantastic in-depth detail, and also tells the story from the viewpoints of both sides and from both strategic and tactical contexts. The book includes unique eyewitness material and many rare and previously unpublished photographs, 'biography boxes', plus data tables, technical assessments, and appendices.

Big Cat Diary: The Last Year of the Jaguar with 6 Squadron RAF
by J Sullivan
This book was conceived as a personal gift by the last commanding officer of an RAF Jaguar Squadron, to the personnel of Number 6 Squadron as a record, primarily through pictures, of their achievements in the final year of the Jaguar’s service. Now available more widely, this book nevertheless remains a very personal, and thus unique, perspective on the closing of a chapter in RAF history; the retirement from service of the Jaguar after 33 years of strong, dependable performance on the front-line of the RAF as a ground attack fighter.
The Jaguar is a very photogenic airplane, with a complementary blend of business-like angles and shapely curves. This book follows the Jaguar, and the personnel who supported her, through training in the UK and detachments overseas. The Jaguar was never more at home than when flying fast and low. Many of the images in this book were donated by the legions of aviation enthusiasts who had ample opportunity to capture her in her element.
The performance of the squadron in its last year remained strong to the very end, a testament to the dedication of the Jaguar Force personnel and their ‘Jaguar Spirit’. Enveloped in the cloak of ‘Jaguar Force Excellence’, they deserve the highest praise for their energy, commitment, and loyalty. This book is principally about them and for them, but also for all with an interest in aviation excellence to enjoy.

Bomber Units of the Luftwaffe 1933-45 V1
by H deZeng
During the interwar years, both in Britain and Germany, some believed that bombers could expand the battlefield to the home front of their opponents, damaging morale and disrupting the means of production. The German Blitzkrieg relied heavily on the Luftwaffe’s bomber force. From Spain to Barbarossa, the integration of the Kampfflieger forces into the overall strategy proved highly successful. However, once Germany was forced on the retreat, the tactics of the Luftwaffe’s bomber forces changed from offensive to defensive actions.
This is the first of two volumes providing highly detailed material on the organization of Luftwaffe bomber units in World War II. The books cover some 50 bomber Geschwader together with their component Staff flights and Gruppen. They also deal with formations, designations, and reorganizations through to the end of the war, with locations, bases, and transfers. The book also includes a comprehensive breakdown of theatres of operations, key battles, and aircraft types that were flown by each unit. The volumes have listings of commanders showing when and where they were in command. Each volume has numerous photos, many in color, depicting bombers in unit markings with close-ups of the unit emblems and badges.

Clear the Deck! Naval Aviation Accidents
by C Graff
Aircraft carrier operations were a dangerous business, especially in wartime. When air operations are confined to a flight deck of 50,000 square feet (escort carrier size), it was one of the most hectic and hazardous places on earth. Accidents were bound to happen. In wartime, the stakes were even higher as heavily loaded and armed combat planes went about their missions in unprecedented numbers. Commonly, there was no alternate airfield, no time to lose, and absolutely no room for error.
Clear the Deck! showcases many never-before-published amazing and dramatic World War II-era, U.S. Navy battle damage, accident, and flight operations photographs gathered from the National Archives, National Museum of Naval Aviation, the Seattle’s Museum of Flight, and numerous other collections.
This book features U.S. Naval aircraft in action from Eugene Ely to the Brewster Buffalo, to the ultimate fighters of World War II Corsairs, Hellcats, Tigercats, and Bearcats many coming to grief on pitching, rolling carrier decks. The action begins in the 1920s, heats up during the carrier battles of 1942-44, and concludes in the waters off the Japanese home islands as damaged fighters and torpedo bombers come back aboard ship often times with disastrous consequences.

Experimental & Prototype Air Force Jet Fighters
by D Jenkins & T Landis
The United States Air Force was late in developing a jet fighter, definitely behind Germany and the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, a small number of Lockheed P-80 Shooting Stars did make it to the European and Mediterranean theaters of operations before VE Day, although they did not see combat. After the war, the sheer size of the U.S. aviation industry guaranteed that American fighters would soon dominate the skies.
However, the state of the art was advancing so fast that many development efforts never resulted in production aircraft; concepts that had seemed reasonable, even ideal, at the time were quickly overcome by newer and better technology. In the United States alone, several dozen different fighter designs made it to the prototype stage during the 1950s and 1960s.
In this book, Dennis R. Jenkins and Tony R. Landis look at the variety of different jet-fighter concepts developed by the U.S. Air Force after World War II. These pages cover all experimental and prototype jet fighters that made it to the hardware stage - design studies and “paper airplanes” are not discussed since other current books are dedicated to those subjects. The rationale for developing each aircraft is covered, along with a discussion of the technology needed to build it, its flight-test program, and the reasons it was cancelled or ordered into production. The text is derived mostly from official Air Force documents, and all of the aircraft are well covered photographically, usually with seldom-seen images showing them as they appeared during their flight-test program.

Farnborough and the Fleet Air Arm
by G Cooper
This is a companion volume to Farnborough: 100 Years of British Aviation, by Peter Cooper, which was published in the summer of 2006. This book, however, concentrates on the activities of the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Aircraft/Aerospace Establishment at Farnborough. This department was perhaps the most demonstrative of all RAE centers of research; almost all its experimental work involved aircraft undergoing some full-scale activity in being launched or brought to rest (sometimes with extensive predictable damage). The author, a chartered engineer employed at RAE during 1936-46, has recorded the research activities of RAE as a center of worldwide aviation expertise. This comprehensive account covers the activities of the Naval Aircraft Department, previously the Catapult Section of the RAE, together with an overview of subsequent developments in the art and practice of 'Flying Navy'. This work introduced the provision of flightdeck machinery and equipment by the RAE for operating aircraft from ships at sea. This book describes in detail the engineering support given to decommissioning of HMS ARK Royal in 1978. It covers the invention and development of ship-borne catapults, accelerators, arrester gears, safety barriers, the angled deck, and visual landing aids all British inventions, and adopted by foreign navies who currently operate fleet carriers. The book also includes details of experimental work in mechanically assisted launching of heavy bombers, flexible landing decks for undercarriageless aircraft, and arrester gear in the event of overshoot of airfields, including proposals for the Concorde.

Focke-Wulf Fw200 Condor
***Coming May 2009***
by J-C Salgado
This is a lavishly and highly detailed account of one of the most elegant and deadly aircraft to serve during World War II. Designed and built in the late 1930s, originally as a civilian airliner to compete with the American DC-2 and DC-3, the Fw 200 grabbed the international stage when it broke the record for flying non-stop from Berlin to New York in August 1938. However, it is for its role as a maritime strike aircraft in World War II that the Fw 200 gained its reputation as the 'Scourge of the Atlantic'. This book uncovers unique and unpublished material on this most revered aircraft of the Luftwaffe and will appeal to scale modelers and historians alike.

From Barbarossa to Odessa
by E Hooton
This book covers the often overlooked involvement of World War II aircraft from Axis states other than Germany, such as the Romanians, who claimed a total of over 600 air victories, the Hungarians, the Slovaks, and even the Bulgarians. This makes the subject varied and of great interest, particularly because of the large variety of aircraft types employed by both sides, all of which are fully documented. Aided by a large number of previously unpublished photographs, the book tells the story of the campaign from both sides and provides detailed eyewitness accounts from individual pilots who were involved in the fighting. Besides day-to-day operations, appendices will contain comprehensive victory and loss lists.

From Barbarossa to Odessa - Part Two
by D Bernad & J Roba
From Barbarossa to Odessa: Part 2 is the second of two volumes on the air combat which took place on the southern flank of the Eastern Front following Operation Barbarossa. The period covered in this book saw the occupation of Bessarabia and southwest Ukraine and concluded when the Germans captured the area's regional capital, Odessa, on October 16, 1941. It was one of the most bitter and intensive air campaigns fought in the east, because local Soviet commanders had dispersed most of their assets in time, thus preventing their destruction on the ground. This gave them the ability to respond effectively to the combined Axis onslaught. Accordingly, the Red Air Force was able to achieve some of its greatest successes of 1941 in this little-studied campaign.
This book covers the often overlooked involvement of aircraft from Axis states other than Germany, such as the Romanians, who claimed a total of over 600 air victories, the Hungarians, the Slovaks, and even the Bulgarians. Hypersonic - Revised Edition
by D Jenkins & T Landis
Nineteen years before Space Shuttle, the small, black, rocket-powered, bullet-shaped X-15 showed it was possible to fly into and out of space. There had never been anything like the X-15; it had a million-horsepower engine and could fly twice as fast as a rifle bullet. The X-15 set records that stood for years.
Specialty Press’s bestseller, Hypersonic, has been re-released in a new softbound format at a reduced price. This book is the most extensively researched history of the X-15 program yet produced. The book was written with the cooperation of surviving X-15 pilots as well as many other program principals and is based on six years of research in Air Force, NASA, and North American archives. It covers the tasks of converting and testing the B-52 carrier airplanes, building the first full-pressure suits to protect the pilot, building the first engineering mission simulators, acquiring the remote lakebed landing sites, and building the radar range. It also covers the flight program in detail, including the most authoritative flight log ever assembled; in many instances, information in this log was derived from the original flight data recordings.
Also covered are each of the experiments that were flown aboard the X-15 late in its career when it became the workhorse of the space program, carrying such things as startrackers destined for the Apollo program and missile detection systems that would later be sent into orbit on satellites.

Kursk: The Air Battle
by C Bergström
Compiled by one of the world's leading experts on the subject of the air war over the Eastern Front, Christer Bergström, Kursk: The Air Battle, is the third in a series of books covering the major phases of the air war in this theatre of operations. It will be required reading for all historians of the Luftwaffe during World War II and those with a specific interest in the Eastern Front in particular.
The German 'Kursk' offensive, 'Operation Zitadelle,' was launched on July 4, 1943. Strong Soviet defense ensured that the Germans failed to make their planned breakthrough and, after three weeks, defense was turned to attack by the Soviets, as two counter-attacks saw the Red Army seize the initiative and ultimately force the Germans to retreat. During the month of August, Soviet forces recaptured strategic cities such as Oryol, Belgorod, and Kharkov. This book provides a detailed history of the air battles that were a part of this operation.
To date, no single study has been written in English on the air aspects of the battle in which, literally, thousands of aircraft were pitted against each other. The strength of the author's writing lies in its detail, his ability to tell the story from the viewpoints of both sides, and from both strategic and tactical contexts. There is also much unique eye-witness material and the text will be accompanied by a large number of rare and previously unpublished photographs, 'biography boxes', plus data tables, technical assessments, and appendices.

Luftwaffe at War Volume 2: Blitzkrieg in the West 1939-1940
by Y Gordon & D Komissarov
In the second title in this new series, author Edward Hooton examines the period between the victory over Poland in 1939 and the crushing defeats of Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Norway, and Denmark during the dark days of 1940 when, ultimately, Britain alone was left undefeated. As in the Polish campaign, the Luftwaffe's role was pivotal. It won air superiority over the theatre of operations and was able to destroy much of the enemy's material before the army swept forward.

Luftwaffe Colours 1935 1945
by M. Ullman
Much has been written about the Luftwaffe, but no aspect has been more controversial than the question of camouflage and markings of the aircraft. Here, author Michael Ullmann follows the development and use of many colors and establishes the links betwen the then-standard RAL colors and those adopted by the German Air Ministry. He reveals how and why these finishes were developed and applied to both military and Lufthansa aircraft. Supplemented by more than 300 photographs, drawings, detailed color aircraft profiles, and a highly accurate chart of real paint chips, Luftwaffe Colours 1935-1945 presents a remarkable insight into the art of World War II German camouflage markings.

Luftwaffe Eagle
***Coming July 2009***
by W. Schuck
This is the autobiography of Luftwaffe pilot Walter Schuck, who flew the Me109 in the Arctic Sea fighter squadrons, becoming the Russian air force's feared enemy in the far north. Awarded the Knights Cross in April 1944, he claimed his 100th kill in June of that year, then barely 48 hours later shot down 12 aircraft in one day - a record never achieved by any other Arctic Sea pilot. He took command of the third Staffel of JG 7, and his success in the aerial theatre was unsurpassed when he brought down four B-17 bombers while on a transit flight. Shortly afterwards, meeting one of the bombers' escort fighters in combat, his fuel system exploded and he had to bail out. Walter Schuck's war was over, after more than 500 front-line sorties and 206 confirmed kills. In a gripping narrative, the author helps us to understand why he and his colleagues were prepared to lay down their lives for their people and their country.

Luftwaffe Fighters & Fighter-Bombers Over Far North
by K Aakra
The Luftwaffe’s campaign in Scandinavia and the Far North the Eismeerfront from 1940 to 1945 can still be regarded as largely ‘uncharted territory’ in terms of historical research. Air operations over the Far North were demanding and intensive, with the two main German fighter units, JG 5 and JG 77, engaged against both the RAF and the Russians. Lesser-known units also took part, and this book examines all these units’ aircraft, many of which were engaged in attacking British and Soviet-held aircraft, airfields, bridges, communications lines and transport, as well as enemy maritime targets throughout the area. The main emphasis of the book is on camouflage and markings, but it also details the structure and organization of the units as well as operations, losses and accidents, and includes information on the senior and junior commanders involved. Focusing on the Luftwaffe fighter force in Denmark, northern Finland and Norway, the authors have spent many years collecting information and photographs for this exhaustive study. Much of the photographic material reveals a treasure-trove of fascinating, previously unseen and often unknown ‘fact-busting’ material that will appeal to the military and aviation enthusiast as well as historians.

Magnesium Overcast - Revised Edition
by D Jenkins
The Convair B-36 “Peacemaker” was the ultimate statement of American air power at the beginning of the Cold War. An intriguing mix of proven World War II concepts and 1950s high-tech innovations, the aircraft would spark more controversy than any weapon system ever built until the ill-fated Star Wars system of the late 1980s.
Extensive research at various archives around the country have uncovered new and previously unpublished details about the B-36 and its derivatives. Among these are the first-ever photos of the never-flown second prototype YB-60 all-jet version, details about Convair’s flying-boat version of the XC-99 cargo aircraft, and technical information of the stillborn Variable Discharge Turbine B-36C variant.
Includes extensive photographic coverage of the devastating 1952 Texas tornado that severally damaged and grounded a good portion of the B-36 fleet. A detailed serial number list covers each airplane and its final disposition, and a chapter covers the efforts to reclaim and scrap the aircraft as they were taken out of service.

Me 262 Volume 3
by R Smith & E Creek
This reprint of Me 262 Volume Three continues J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek's detailed analysis of the world's first operational jet fighter and fighter-bomber. This book covers the night war waged by the Me 262 against the threat of the British Mosquito over Berlin in 1945: “I had caught a Mosquito illuminated in the searchlights at about 8,500 meters. However, because I had not managed to maneuver my Me 262 into the proper position, the rapid closing speed forced me to break off before I could finish my attack. With a top speed of 850 km/h, I was much faster than the Mosquito in front of me. I contacted the fighter controller by radio, asking him to keep the Mosquito illuminated. Then, I tried making a full turn to keep the enemy aircraft at the correct distance for a second attack.” Also included is a day-by-day account of the Me 262's role in the daylight defense of the Third Reich. The authors have drawn extensively from the personal accounts of both German and Allied pilots as well as thousands of archive documents: “These guys came up so fast that we never knew what hit us. My aircraft was badly hit in the engine and port wing by cannon shells, and I was about to bail out when it seemed that the aircraft was still flyable. Lt. Florine's P-38 was not hit and he spent the next few minutes keeping the two jets off my back by diving into them each time they tried to close and finish me. Like my aircraft, his was unarmed. There is little doubt that he risked his own life to save mine.” Following more than 30 years of research, Me 262 Volume Three forms part of the most comprehensive account of the Luftwaffe's revolutionary jet fighter ever published.

Messerschmitt Bf 110 C, D and E An Illustrated Study: Variants • Weapons • Equipment
by J Vasco
The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was the Luftwaffe’s prime multi-role heavy fighter. By the time Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, ten Luftwaffe Gruppen had been equipped with this heavy fighter. However, as a long-range escort fighter, the Bf 110C received a disastrous mauling at the hands of the more nimble Hurricane and Spitfire during the "Battle of Britain". Rather than protecting the bombers under escort, the Bf 110C formations usually found that they were hard-pressed to defend themselves, and the farcical situation developed in which single-seat Bf 109E fighters were having to afford protection to the escort fighters. The complete failure of the Bf 110C in the role for which it had been conceived led to its eventual withdrawal from the Channel coast but did not result in any reduction in its production priority. Author John Vasco has researched a wealth of new material on the B, C, D and E variants of this aircraft, including many previously unpublished photographs and high-quality artwork and color profiles. This detailed examination of the aircraft will be an invaluable work of reference to historians and modelers of the Bf 110.

Mikoyan MiG-21
by Y Gordon & K Dexter w/D Komissarov
First flown in 1956 and entering service in 1959, the MiG-21 ‘Fishbed’ has proved to be one of the most successful of all Soviet era jet fighters, seeing service not only with the Soviet air force but with numerous other air forces worldwide. Among jet fighters, theMiG-21 holds a wide range of records covering total production figures and the number of nations that operated it. For the first time this book will provide a detailed description of every single member of the MiG-21 family, from the Ye-2 swept-wing development aircraft to the latest ‘distant relatives’ of the ‘Fishbed’ developed in China. The book covers the MiG-21’s combat career, including the Vietnam War, the Arab-Israeli conflicts, the Indo-Pakistani clashes, and various local wars in Africa. Also included are the fleet lists for each operator featuring known serials and construction numbers. A separate well-illustrated chapter will deal with the Chinese derivatives that were supplied to Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Iraq, Iran, and other nations. For many years the Soviet designers deemed the MiG-21 to be the best light fighter in its category until a Northrop F-5E Freedom Fighter captured in Vietnam found its way to the Soviet Union and met the MiG-21 in mock combat. The book details results of this ‘flyoff’, which came as a rude awakening for Soviet pilots and designers. Today, upgraded MiG-21s with state-of-the-art avionics still serve with the air arms of Romania.

Military Aircraft of the 1970s
by G Manning
The 1970s were a time of radical change for military aviation enthusiasts. At the start of the decade, the U.S. was still heavily involved in Vietnam and vast numbers of military aircraft were stationed in Europe, on both sides of the Iron Curtain. By the end of the decade, the Vietnam War was over and the first stirrings of Détente were in the air. Following the oil crises, the global economy teetered on the edge of recession and many countries, such as Britain, were faced with uncomfortable questions about the size and cost of their defense establishments, which led to the gradual elimination of many older types.
Despite these changes, throughout the 1970s, many classic designs were still operational around the globe and new types and variants were still being developed. This sequel to author Gerry Manning’s earlier and well-received Military Aircraft of the 1960s, records the great variety of aircraft types and camouflage schemes that were visible during this fascinating decade. The book is a visual delight and an exercise in pure nostalgia for all those who had an interest in military aviation during these years.

by J Chambers
NASA's Langley Research Center, Virginia, was established on July 17, 1917, and has played a key role in the development of aviation since its infancy. The center has been a leader in wind-tunnel research since its first tunnel, the Five-Foot Atmospheric Wind Tunnel, opened in 1919. Through the years, Langley has wind-tunnel tested or test flown a wide range of aircraft, from tilt-wing transports to high-lift wings for commercial aircraft, and advanced studies of airflow over wings. Results from Langley's aeronautical development have been incorporated into today's modern civil transports and military aircraft. Radical Wings and Wind Tunnels presents a behind-the-scenes look at how NACA, and today's NASA, use wind-tunnels and flight testing to advance aeronautical science.

Rocks in the Clouds: High-Ground Aircraft Crashes of South Wales
by E Doylerush
During World War II, many pilots of both Allied and Axis aircraft met their fate in the peaks of the high mountains across Wales. This book covers the various such aircraft crash sites found in the area south of the latitude of Brecon, which from east to west includes the Black Mountains, Brecon Beacons, to south of Llandoverty, and the Presceli Hills in the west.
Only one Luftwaffe aircraft landed in this area, a Heinkel 111 which struck barrage balloon cables at Newport, with only the pilot Oblt. Harry Wappler surviving. He later escaped from prison camp and stole a Royal Air Force aircraft. Historian Hugh Trivett tells his remarkable story. Elsewhere, a Dornier 217 was shot down by RAF fighters off Port Eynon during the last major raid on Swansea in February 1943. Years later, historian and diver Steve Jones found pieces of the wreckage on the beach at low water and followed the trail into deep water where he located the main site. He traced relatives of the pilot and visited them in Germany.
The book tells these and many other fascinating stories and visits many interesting crash sites. Appendices include a full list of high-ground military losses and memorials to those who perished, as well as a bibliography.

Royal Air Force Fighter Command Losses of 2nd WW Vol. 1
by N Franks
During 1939-1941, Fighter Command lost around 1,000 aircrew. The reasons and circumstances for these losses are shown as crucial campaigns are enacted. Forty illustrations complement the loss details, and appendices provide Fighter Command Orders of Battle at crucial periods in the conflict, plus details of the build-up of Night Fighter Squadrons during 1941, and a list of Wing Leaders. In August 1939, on the eve of the war with Germany, Britain was ill-prepared and Fighter Command could muster only 37 operation squadrons to face the foe. Following a brief campaign in Norway, and the brave but disastrous Battle of France and retreat through Dunkirk, Britain stood alone, waiting. As the forefront of Britain's defense at this time was RAF Fighter Command, with its Hurricanes, Spitfires, Blenheims, and a few obsolete Gladiators. The inevitable onslaught began, and somehow, against vastly superior odds, the pilots, who became immortalized as the world-famed "few", repulsed the Luftwaffe during the frenetic air fighting that culminated in 'The Battle of Britain' in the summer of 1940. Germany's failure to overcome the RAF and its decision to attack Russia allowed Britain to consolidate, rebuild, and then begin to go onto the offensive. This book records operational losses on a day-by-day basis, identifying the units concerned, the crews involved, and the aircraft type, service serial number, and code letters where possible.

Secret Projects: Military Space Technology
***September 2008***
by B Rose
This book outlines the development of space technology for military purposes from its very beginnings during World War II right up to the latest, most sophisticated systems. The author starts with references to the prewar era, then goes on to discuss German rocketry during World War II and their bold wartime ambitions, which were finally developed during the Cold War. By the mid-1950s, space was being visualized as the next big battlefield, and both the U.S. and Soviet Union had ambitions to expand their domains into the solar system. Many of these ideas were completely impractical, way beyond possible realization, extremely dangerous, and completely unaffordable. By the start of manned spaceflight, missions became politically motivated, although military projects continued in the background and this would eventually surface as the Star Wars proposals. This is a serious, factual study about the many projects that have come to the drawing board since the very beginning of space technology development; from the early experiments by the Germans in World War II, through the X-plane era, 'Star Wars', and then to the advanced spaceplane projects such as NASP (National Aerospace Plane), Copper Coast, and the Aurora spaceplane, Soviet spaceplanes and long-range USAF hypersonic strike and orbital aircraft. Many photos are included to illustrate the detailed and comprehensive text.

Soviet Air Power in World War 2
by Y Gordon
From the team that published the critically acclaimed and hugely successful 'Famous Russian Aircraft' series comes a book that is the definitive guide to all of the aircraft flown by the Soviet Air Force in World War II. While most other books on the Soviet Air Force in World War II dwell largely on individual aircraft types, this book also takes a closer look at the Soviet Air Force's structure and aircraft fleet. It includes all of the unit insignia of Soviet air armies, divisions and regiments, as well as the varied artwork and camouflage schemes used on individual aircraft. This book features brief descriptions (including performance data) and many previously unpublished photos and color side views of all the aircraft types that operated in the immediate pre-war years and in World War II, including many British aircraft flown by the Soviet Air Force. The most important combat operations conducted by the Air Force and the Soviet Naval Aviation are described and illustrated by tactical maps. The book also tells about the Soviet Air Force commanders and famous Soviet aces of the period; the aces' aircraft and their personal insignia are illustrated. This is a unique book that will be of interest not only to aviation and military history fans but also to modelers.

Stalingrad: The Air Battle: November 1942-February 1943
by C Ehrengar
This book covers the significant air battles which took place over Stalingrad between August and November 1942 and the subsequent airlift operation in the winter of 1942/43 intended to relieve the German Sixth Army, which was by then trapped in Stalingrad. It also covers the air war during the Russian counter-offensive in early 1943 where the Luftwaffe played a major role in saving the whole German Eastern Front (and thus the whole German war effort) from collapsing. This is an aspect of the war in the East that has previously not been covered in such depth. The strength of the author's writing lies in its detail and his ability to tell the story from the viewpoint of both sides.

Sukhoi Su-25 Frogfoot: The Soviet Union's Tank-Buster
by J Hunter
The book describes the Su-25's development history and its extensive combat career, starting with Operation Romb, when the then-experimental Su-25 received its baptism of fire in the Afghan War, to the conflicts in former Yugoslavia, and the drug-busting operations in Peru. A detailed list is given of the type's many operators, which even included a NATO country (Slovakia). In addition to the main versions up to and including the Su-25TM (Su-39) ‘tank killer', due attention is paid to the latest programs to upgrade the Su-25 with modern requirements both in Russia and elsewhere. The book includes color artwork and detailed scale drawings in the usual Aerofax style.

US Experimental & Prototype Aircraft Projects: Fighters 1939-1945
by W Norton
America's military aircraft industry was forced to grow at an incredible pace during World War II. At the beginning of the conflict, the nation's air arms were out-matched by better-performing Axis aircraft. It was the development, often in secret, and subsequent employment of America's fighter aircraft that helped turn the tide of the war.
This book focuses on those American fighter projects of WWII that never reached combat forces, or only in a very limited manner. The book illuminates little known or minimally documented aircraft and projects that significantly advanced fighter design that never went into full-rate production and deployment. The 'standard' types are also examined to illustrate the 'state-of-the-art' at the time, the American posture and capabilities, goals set by national and military leadership, and general factors affecting the course of development for classes of fighters. Hence, this work follows the overall development of American fighter aircraft, but emphasizes those little-known projects that matured to the point of significant design development such as mockups, wind-tunnel models, and especially those yielding flying prototypes. Also includes 'dead-end' variants of service types, those only exported after US evaluation, and aircraft that entered service in only small numbers before being overcome by more advanced models or the end of hostilities.
The book provides photos and drawings of every American fighter of the war and many rare or never-before-published images of little-known types of projects.

Valkyrie - Revised Edition
by D Jenkins & T Landis
The Valkyrie is an icon of modern aviation, which is curious considering that only two were built and they flew just 164 times. Like the maiden of Norse mythology that it was named for, the Valkyrie awed those around it. Beautiful in form, and almost unbelievable in function, the B-70 would have been the ultimate incarnation of Curtis LeMay’s vision of a strategic bomber. The half-million pound aircraft was capable of flying over 2,000 miles per hour in excess of 80,000 feet, and doing it for hours at a time. Fantastic as the Valkyrie appeared, it was not to be. The political and fiscal climate that existed during the 1960s strangled then killed the aircraft almost before it was born.
This is the story of the largest Mach 3 aircraft ever flown the North American Aviation XB-70A Valkyrie. Dennis R. Jenkins and Tony R. Landis have conducted extensive research in military, NASA, and company archives to find previously uncovered aspects of this fascinating program. Includes descriptions of the proposed bombing and navigation systems, defensive armament, electronic countermeasures, and early attempts at stealth technology.Accompanied by over 250 photos and dozens of illustrations, this in-depth history covers the entire B-70 program, not just the two aircraft that ultimately flew.

Who We Were: A Snapshot History of America
by M Williams, R Cahan & N Osborn
Since the first snapshots were taken in 1888, Americans have used simple, inexpensive cameras to record their life stories. In the process, they have left behind millions of snapshots that document the story of America. Now, for the first time, these personal photographs have been gathered together to tell the nation's history. From sod houses in South Dakota to the skyscrapers of New York City, these personal photographs form the first people's photo history of America. The snapshots capture nearly a century of American life-telling our story through our own eyes. The Wright Brothers, the World Wars, Woodstock. They are all here, creating a crazy quilt of steamships and biplanes, migrants and flappers, seal clubbers and suffragettes. This is who we were and who we are.

X-Plane Crashes: Exploring Experimental, Rocket Plane, and Spycraft Incidents, Accidents and Crash Sites
by P Merlin
Known as "The X-Hunters", authors Peter W. Merlin and Tony Moore have located more than 100 crash sites of exotic aircraft from Edwards air Force Base and Area 51. Together, they have recovered parts of supersonic rocket planes, stealthy spy craft, and vehicles that have reached the edge of space. Each story in the book profiles an unusual aircraft and the brave men who flew them. The authors examine the contributing causes of each crash and use then-and-now photographs to illustrate their findings. The stories end with The X-Hunters' search for the crash site and what they discovered. Each adventure combines C.S.I.-type skills with X-Files persistence, with a dash of Indiana Jones for adventure. Aircraft profiled include the YB-49 and a pair of N9M flying wings, X-1A, X-1D, VB-51, XB-70, SR-71, YF-12, U-2 prototype, and many more.

Yakovlev Yak-36, Yak-38 and Yak-41: The Soviet "Jump Jets"
by Y Gordon
The Yakovlev Yak-38 “Forger” was the Soviet Navy's first and only VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) multi-role combat aircraft. Outwardly similar in design to the British-built Harrier, the first prototype of the aircraft was completed on April 14, 1970, and it made its maiden flight January 15, 1971. Before production ceased, 231 aircraft were built, including 38 two-seat trainers. The aircraft suffered from severe payload restrictions, particularly when operating in hot environments, such as the Indian Ocean. Following the break up of the Soviet Union, the Yak-38 saw service with the Russian Federation and Ukraine air forces, although all have been withdrawn from service. Apart from their role as ship-borne aircraft, a number were also deployed to Afghanistan following the Soviet invasion in 1979.
The Yak-41 “Freestyle” was a development of the earlier program. Production ended in the late 1980s and the first flight occurred on March 9, 1987. The project was cancelled in 1991 as a result of restrictions on the Russian defense budget. More recently, Yakovlev was involved with Lockheed Martin in the development of the Joint Strike Fighter the future F-35 which will see service not only with U.S. forces but with the British and other European air forces. This book includes a comprehensive account of the development and operational record of the aircraft along with color and black and white photos throughout.

Passion about Spring is something that we often lose as we get older, but fortunately that importance is captured here. Law School: Getting In, Getting Good, Getting the Gold
by T Messinger
Law School presents six major topics in the first year alone, each with dozens of cases and hundreds of additional sources. For most law students, understanding the meaning of even the most simple of legal concepts results in confusion, frustration, and even failure. Law students are smart, but unfamiliar with the terminology and reasoning of the law, as well as the framework of how each subject fits into a broader legal framework. Law schools operate on an inductive basis, while most students rely on informal, deductive learning. This book bridges the gap between the two. Further, it instructs law students how to learn the law on a deeper level of understanding - but with less unproductive and even wasted effort. In short: how to learn the law in less time and with better retention, comprehension, and genuine understanding.

The Slacker's Guide to Law School: Success Without Stress
by J Doria
The title of this book, The Slackers Guide to Law School, might strike some as irreverent. "Slacker" is a term of pride and even endearment among the latest generation of student, however, this book gives prospective law students a realistic idea of what exactly they are getting into. This book is not about laziness, but about succeeding on one's own terms. Thus the subtitle: Success Without Stress.
Students should: (1) set their own goals and not get caught up in the hype of what everyone else is pursuing; (2)establish methods of study, fine-tuning one that works best; and (3) maintain a healthy life balance. For the careful "slacker," it is possible to make time for hobbies, socializing, dating or even starting a family. This reduces stress, makes law school more enjoyable, and, as shown in this book, can boost performance in class.

Dr. Paul Gahlinger brings his experience as physician, anthropologist, hospital director, and professor of public health and medicine to explain how it really works. Dr. Gahlinger has personally visited a great number of these hospitals, clinics, and doctors. You cannot always trust what you see on the Internet-but you can trust this book. While many medical tourism “referral services” take your money and send you to low-quality providers, this book shows you how to do it directly, with all addresses, phone and fax numbers, and everything you need to know to obtain superb health care at an affordable cost.

The God Awful Truth About Heaven

Christianity has given birth to crusades, pogroms, pre-emptive wars and touchdowns for Jesus, but when it comes to that eternal question in the sky, "How did their God describe heaven?" Christians haven't a holy clue. For the first time in 2000 years, the actual description of heaven according to Jesus has been abstracted from the Bible and served up to the masses with humorous irreverence.

Fuel Altereds Forever
by S Reyes
What type of drag car makes race goers shutter, shriek, and cheer? A 200-mph, 7-second, 96-inch wheelbased A/Fuel Altered, that's what! These supercharged, 2,000-horsepower cars from the bygone days of drag racing demanded the utmost respect, as did the racers who piloted them. Most contemporary Top Fuel and Funny Car drivers would quake at the thought of driving one of these short, ill-handling beasts. It took a rare (or slightly crazy) breed of drag racer to slide behind the wheel of one of these exciting nitro-burning drag cars.
Author Steve Reyes has included more than 350 of his best photos of his favorite class: Fuel Altereds. Never-before-heard stories bring the action right to you. Relive drag racing's glory days through photos of rarely seen cars, first-hand accounts, and stories of racers and their cars.

20:17:40 UTC, 20 July 1969. Spoken by Neil Armstrong to an enthralled worldwide audience of tens of millions who watched and listened, live, moments after Apollo 11's landing on the Moon, were the words:"Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." It was a culmination of a dream that dated back millennia. It stands as the landmark technical achievement in the 6,000-year recorded history of the human race. Air France
by G Jones
Air France is one of the world's great airlines. It is a French institution with its own unique style, part of the fabric of the country as well as being the national flag carrier. This history of Air France is published in the 75th anniversary year of its foundation, and it is as much a slice of French social history as it is an aviation title. Following the takeover by Air France of KLM in 2004, the combined company is the largest airline in the world in terms of operating revenue and the largest in Europe in terms of passenger mileage.
Over the years, Air France has flown a considerable variety of aircraft, including the De Havilland Comet, the Vickers Viscount, and the Sud Aviation Caravelle, but, as with British Airways, the airline will always be associated with the Concorde and the great age of supersonic transatlantic flying. This book provides a full history of the airline, the development of its aircraft, and the routes it operates. It also explores the social aspects of the airline.
This book also covers the many airlines that were associates of Air France in recent years and the diverse aircraft types and airlines that provide the current national and sometimes international feeds to Air France's main hubs at Paris Charles de Gaulle, Orly, and Lyons.

British Airliner Prototypes Since 1945
by S. Skinner
This in-depth study of British airliner prototypes from 1945 to the present gives a unique overview of post-war British airliner development. This is the first time that a detailed study has been produced in one volume on the prolific developmental output of British post-war civil aviation design. The author provides a detailed history for each of the many prototypes with both color and black and white photographs, many of which have never been published before. With the recent end of airliner manufacture in the UK by indigenous firms, this is a timely look at how the great story of airliner building in Britain developed post war and grew with great success over many years, and how now, at the beginning of the 21st century, British-built airliners are a thing of the past.

Chrysler Concept Cars 1940-1970
by T Thomason
"From World War II through the muscle-car era, Chrysler's innovation and experimentation took center stage, quite literally, in the form of its concept cars. These concept cars hinted at future production vehicles and explored new and unproven technologies (turbine power anyone?).
Chrysler Concept Cars 1940-1970 follows the design, development, and creation of almost 50 Dodge, Chrysler, and Plymouth concept cars during the automotive industry's golden postwar years, when Chrysler set the Detroit Style. Readers get an inside look not only at the styling of the cars, but also of the performance developments and engineers' unique ideas. The book features interviews, profiles, and references to the work of famous Chrysler automotive designers and engineers including Virgil Exner, Chuck Mashigan, Dana Waterman, Elwood P. Engel, John Herlitz, and Jack Charipar.
The book delivers many never-before-published vintage black-and-white and color photos located during hundreds of hours of research in the Chrysler Historical Archives, the Henry Ford Museum, the Detroit Public Library, and other private collections. While writing this book, veteran automotive writers David Fetherston and Tony Thacker enlisted the help of more than 10 Chrysler designers, engineers, technicians, and librarians over three years. The book is the definitive edition on this subject, as a book with such detail specializing in this period of Chrysler's history has never been produced. Chrysler Concept Cars should capitalize on heightened interest in Chrysler's special interest production vehicles, and concept cars in general, as indicated by recent auction sale prices. "

Fuelies: Fuel-Injected Corvettes 1957-65
by R Genat
Throughout American culture, there have been people and sometimes objects famous enough to be recognized by a single name. In the automotive world, such words of greatness include Hemi, Shelby, and Fuelie.
Corvettes manufactured between 1957 and 1965 and equipped with fuel injection systems atop their small-block engines are given special respect by enthusiasts. In that era, “Fuelie” was the slang term used to describe any fuel injected Corvette. And at that time the fuel injected Corvettes were the fastest cars on the street, road course, and drag strip. In addition to the rough exhaust note created by the high compression ratio and long-duration camshaft, gearheads could identify Corvettes with the fuel injection units by the distinctive hiss they produced at idle.
Developed by Zora Arkus Duntov and built by GM's Rochester division, this fuel injection unit turned the docile, small-block engine into a super performance engine with as much visual impact as it had horsepower. When released in 1957, the fuel injected 283 cubic-inch engine developed 283 horsepower one horsepower per cubic inch. The last of the fuel injected Corvettes made 375 horsepower. Fuelies: Fuel Injected Corvettes 1957-1965 celebrates the nine years of production of the Corvette, the Corvette engines, and the fuel injection units that transformed the car into a performance icon. The book also covers passenger car installations (Chevrolets from 1957 to 1959, Pontiacs, and Chryslers) and other fuel injection oddities.

GM Automatic Overdrive Transmission Builders and Swappers Guide
***October 2008***
by C Ruggles
There's an important component standing between your engine and your drive wheels: the transmission. Inside that metal case is a bewildering array of gears, bearings, seals, and more. The automatic transmission is a miracle of modern engineering, but it can also be a source of trouble. If your transmission breaks down you're not going anywhere, and if it's just not working properly, your car will never realize its performance potential. In this book, expert mechanic and drag racer Cliff Ruggles demystifies the popular GM 700-R4 and 4L60 automatic transmissions. How to Build & Modify High-Performance Manual Transmissions
by P Cangialosi
Once upon a time, if you didn't know how to drive a car with a manual transmission, you didn't know how to drive a car. Early in the 1950s, the major manufacturers figured they could broaden their audience and increase their sales by developing a transmission that would shift itself. While automatic transmissions became more and more popular among commuters into the '60s and beyond, manual transmissions remained required equipment among performance enthusiasts.
Fast forward to today; only 5 percent of all vehicles come equipped with manual transmissions, and 99 percent of all parking valets don't know how to drive them. But there was a time in the not-so-distant past that if you had a performance car, you had a manual transmission, and if you were a driver worth your weight in salt, you knew how to use one. For all the performance junkies who have hung in there and insisted on doing your own shifting, this book is for you!
How to Build and Modify High-Performance Manual Transmissions, by author Paul Cangialosi, is a complete guide to all manual transmissions, including theory and design, disassembly, inspection, rebuilding, tips and techniques, and performance modifications. Borg Warner T-10s, ST-10s, and T-5s are covered, as well as Ford Top Loaders, Chrysler A833s, and GM Muncies. Peripheral systems are covered as well, including clutches, speedometers, assemblies, shifters, and shifter modifications. Also included are tables, speedometer ratios for GM cars, torque specs, oil capacities, and ratio charts of all the popular transmissions.

How to Build Max Performance Buick Engines
by J Bryant
Skylarks, GSXs, Grand Nationals, Rivieras, Gran Sports; the list of formidable performance Buicks is impressive. From the torque monsters of the 1960s to the high-flying Turbo models of the '80s, Buicks have a unique place in performance history.
During the 1960s, when word of the mountains of torque supplied by the big-inch Buicks hit the street, nobody wanted to mess with them. Later, big-inch Buicks and the Hemi Chryslers went at it hammer and tongs in stock drag shootouts and in the pages of the popular musclecar magazines of the day. The wars between the Turbo Buicks and Mustang Ts in the 1980s were also legendary, as both cars responded so well to modifications.
How to Build Max-Performance Buick Engines is the first performance engine book ever published on the Buick family of engines. This book covers everything from the Nailheads of the '50s and early '60s, to the later evolutions of the Buick V-8 through the '60s and '70s, through to the turbo V-6 models of the '70s and '80s. Veteran magazine writer and Buick owner Jefferson Bryant supplies the most up-to-date information on heads, blocks, cams, rotating assemblies, interchangeability, and oiling-system improvements and modifications, along with details on the best performance options available, avenues for aftermarket support, and so much more. Finally, the Buick camp gets the information they have been waiting for, and it's all right here in How to Build Max-Performance Buick Engines.

Land Rover Discovery Workshop Manual 1990-98
by Brooklands Books
This Workshop Manual covers all basic models of the Land Rover Discovery Series I manufactured between 1989 and 1998. Varieties covered include those with 200Tdi and 300Tdi diesels, the 3.5 carburetor, 3.5, 3.9 and 4.0 injection V8 petrol engines, and the Mpi 2-liter petrol engine. Both manual and automatic transmission versions are included. The material in this book has been specially selected, by a Land Rover expert, for the practical owner who enjoys carrying out basic maintenance and repairs on his or her own vehicle.
The information published here is taken directly from Land Rover's library of technical publications on this vehicle, which includes workshop manuals, parts catalogs, and owners handbooks. The manual does not set out to cover every single job which may be necessary on a Discovery: many jobs require a high degree of mechanical expertise and/or special equipment which the average owner is unlikely to possess. However, descriptions of some more complicated tasks are included here, as are diagnostic tables, to help the interested owner understand the work that may be necessary on his or her vehicle, even if that work will actually be done by professionals. With care and common sense, the practical owner can make an excellent job of maintenance and overhaul. The benefits include money saved, the satisfaction of work well done, and increased understanding and appreciation of the vehicle. Knowing more about the vehicle you own will help you to make more informed decisions about work that needs to be carried out, even if you do decide in the end that it makes more sense to take the vehicle to professionals to get that work done.

Tupolev Tu-104: Aeroflot's First Jetliner - Red Star Vol. 35
by Y Gordon
The Tupolev Tu-104 ‘Camel’ was a twin-engined, medium-range, turbojet-powered airliner. Following the British-built Comet and Canadian Avro Jetliner, the Tu-104 became the world’s third jet airliner to take to the skies when it made its maiden flight in June 1956. Produced by the Tupolev design bureau, the Tu-104 was a civilian version of their jet bomber, the Tu-16 ‘Badger’. The first aircraft could carry 50 passengers, but subsequent variants saw this capacity increased to 100. Some 200 aircraft were manufactured by the time production ceased in 1960. It was also flown by the Czech airline, CSA. Aeroflot’s final examples were withdrawn in the early 1980s, although a number were still used by the Soviet military authorities for training cosmonauts.
This volume examines the development and operational record of the Tu-104 from the early 1950s to the end of its career with the Soviet forces. The book focuses on the type’s civilian career and examines all variants of the Tu-104 produced, including the prototype Tu-110 four-engined transport aircraft derived from the type.
