Requiem for Locusts
***Coming November 2008***
by W. Parciak
"I am scattered into a million pieces. Little pieces of sand or glass. Sharp-edged knives or swords, like the ones daddy plays with. They won't let me but when I close my hands I cut myself anyway. Sharp-edged words and eyes, I try to hide from them but cannot." These are the words of Marzita Zaferatos, a mentally-ill young woman who wanders into the lives of her neighbors on Locust Street, whether they want her to or not. On the street live a frail spinster, a career-driven couple and their toddler, a neurologist with a constricting shyness of women, a teenager who wishes her life could be as interesting as her daydreams, and Marzita's father, a circus juggler. These residents are scarcely aware of each other's existence, guarding their private lives behind doors and fences. But Marzita doesn't understand that only superficial contact is customary in the close confines of a city. Sometimes unwillingly, her neighbors are caught up in her delusional, fairytale vision of life with princes and princesses, evil dukes, malevolent knives, circus stars and music, as her world spins out of control and the boundary between insanity and reality unravels.

The Truth
by G Rips
In his debut novel, The Truth, Geoff Rips creates a moral universe in a series of tales narrated by the palsied hunchback Chuy Pingarrón who spends his days on the front porch of a San Antonio whorehouse and is proud to dubbed "the standard of perversion" by those whose stories he tells. Through his twisted perspective we meet the Midwife who is also the house's madam, the philosopher Don Apolo who lives in an iron lung, and Angelita, famous for her hands. Chuy relates the sad story of the impenetrable Soledad, deemed by her mother to be a saint; of la Ramona, whose one eye looks into your soul while the other looks away; and of the enigmatic la Verdad, whose customers seek her out to learn their fortunes. At turns comic and tragic, Chuy's story meditates on the most ancient questions: how do you live a life and what does it mean? Winner of the 2006 AWP Award for the Novel.

The Unraveling Thread
by P Cogan
The Unraveling Thread, to be released June 1, 2008, tells the story of a family exploding in crisis. Harriet McWhinnie, a divorced but successful career woman, arrives home to discover that yet another Agency person has fled, leaving behind Harriet’s sweet but demented mother, her adolescent twin girls, one psychotic with an undiagnosed genetic disorder, the other rebellious and resentful of her disabled sibling, a little five year old boy yearning for the return of his father, and an hyperactive dog who drives everyone crazy. Desperate, Harriet hires a middle-aged,Native American woman, Agatha, with no references, noaddress, and a past steeped in mystery. Stern but loving, Agatha forces each family member to work through their issues with honesty and dignity while hiding from her own grief. In the end, the story’s memorable characters each learn how to pick up the threads of both love and self respect that will pull them out into the harsh world and then lead them back home.
This story is the first time that the relatively common, but severely under-diagnosed chromosomal disorder, Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome, has ever appeared in fiction. Atypical of Dr. Cogan’s previous novels, the clash of the Anglo and Native American cultures casts a different light on the issues facing many American families. The story of a career woman, caught in the sandwich generation, taking care of both her parent and her children, is one that will resonate with many readers, as will the story of a family overwhelmed with medical problems. It is the kind of page-turning novel which will tug on the reader’s heart.

Conquer Back and Neck Pain: Walk It Off! A Spine Doctor's Proven Solutions for Finding Relief Without Pills or Surgery
by M Brown
Renowned spine surgeon Dr. Mark Brown, MD, PhD, explains exactly what causes back pain and why humans are so predisposed to spinal problems. He provides a detailed questionnaire that allows you to identify which of seven types of back pain you are experiencing, and then he explains each of those types in clear and easy-to-understand language. Contrary to what you might expect from a spinal surgeon, Dr. Brown actually advocates against turning to surgery in most cases of spinal pain. In his 35 years of experience, he has found that the vast majority of back pain cases will resolve with minimal treatment. In fact, the very best thing you can do is to simply allow your body to heal itself by avoiding the many treatment pitfalls that people with back pain commonly fall into when looking for relief. Avoiding these mistakes, along with incorporating gentle aerobic exercise, will almost always allow you to “walk off” your back or neck pain naturally.

American Secret Projects: Fighters & Interceptors
by T Buttler
Throughout aviation history there have been many aircraft designs that have failed to progress beyond the drawing board for a variety of reasons. The aircraft that have taken to the skies represent only a small percentage of those that were planned.

This latest title in the highly successful ‘Secret Projects’ series is also the first to deal with United States aircraft. Compiled by Tony Buttler, who has been researching the subject for many years, this book examines the great variety of U.S. fighter designs between the end of World War II and the period immediately after the USA’s withdrawal from Vietnam.

The book covers the immediate postwar designs of subsonic aircraft for both the USAF and USN, U.S. supersonic designs, the U.S. Vertical Take Off and Landing program, and the competitions that ultimately led to the development of iconic aircraft such as the F-14 Tomcat.

American Secret Pusher Fighters of WWII: XP-54, XP-55, and XP-56
***October 2008***
by G Balzer
American Secret Pusher Fighters of World War II analyzes the state of military aircraft procurement just prior to the start of World War II. It provides insight into the difficulties encountered by America's air services in dealing with an isolationist Congress and a limited mindset in the Army, which was seemingly indifferent to the aeronautical progress being made in Europe by the British and Germans. The book then focuses on the three winners of the 1940 fighter competition - the Vultee XP-54, the Curtiss XP-55, and the Northrop XP-56. These radical designs ("Pusher" referred to having the engine in the back) used non-strategic materials and were developed in secret. At the time, the aerodynamics of these aircraft far outpaced engine development. In addition, this book details the technical difficulties of mating an advanced aircraft design with inadequate engine development.

Aufklarer Volume 2
by D Wadman
Concluding the story of the Luftwaffe’s reconnaissance units, this book covers the period from 1942 to end of the war. As the tide of the war turned against Germany, information obtained from Aufklärungsflieger became ever more vital to both the German High Command and local-level ground commanders. Beginning in 1943, new purpose-built aircraft were introduced to deal with the increasing territory range needing coverage on the Russian Front. Among aircraft discussed are the Fw 189, Ar 240, Bv 141, and operations conducted by the Fi 156, Bf 109, and Fw 190-equipped Aufklärungsflieger units. The book covers the development of long-range reconnaissance including operations over Russia, the Mediterranean, and Europe using the Bf 110, Me 410, Ju 88, He 111, Ju 188, and Fw 200. Also discussed is the role of high-altitude reconnaissance using the lesser-known Ju 86 and Hs 130, which were fitted with experimental pressurized compartments. The reconnaissance work of pioneering jet aircraft, Me 262 and Ar 234 is included as is the role of ultra long-range machines such as the six-engined Ju 290, (used for co-operation with the U-boats) and the Me 264 Amerika bomber.

Avro Lancaster: The Bomber that Won the War
***October 2008***
by P Smith
The Avro Lancaster is one of the most well known and revered aircraft in aviation history. The RAF's heavy bomber was developed during the early years of World War 2 when Britain's only means of taking the offensive to Germany was through the Royal Air Force's strategic night-bombing campaign. The first Lancaster mission was in 1942, and the aircraft was an instant success. Powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, its performance outstripped its rivals. By the end of the war, the aircraft had carried out 156,000 missions and dropped over 600,000 tons of high-explosive bombs and more than 51 million incendiary bombs. Its versatility was such that it excelled also in many other roles, including daylight precision bombing. Some of its raids have passed into folklore – the 1943 'Dambusters' raid on dams in the Ruhr area of Germany delivering the unique bouncing bombs designed by Barnes Wallace is probably the most famous. Nineteen Lancasters took part in this raid in May 1943, and eight planes were lost. The 1,000-bomber raid on Cologne led by Bomber Harris and the sinking of the Tirpitz when it was holed up in a Norwegian fjord using 5-ton Tallboy bombs were also key Lancaster raids which changed the course of the war. In total, 7,377 Lancasters were built, the last in December 1945, and although the rapid advance of aviation technology meant that the Lancaster was quickly superseded by the first generation of jet bombers (including the Avro Vulcan), it was still in use with the Canadians in the early 1960s on photo-reconnaissance and maritime patrol, search, and rescue duties. Comprehensively illustrated throughout with a stunning collection of black and white and color photographs, this book will be entertaining reading not only for aviation enthusiasts, but for all who know the legend of the Lancaster bomber in Britain's wartime history.

Avro Vulcan

The Avro Vulcan : Britain's Cold War Warrior
by Y Gordon & D Komissarov
The Vulcan was the most famous of the three types of V- Bombers. Along with the Victor and the Valiant V-Bombers, the Vulcan helped maintain Britain's strategic nuclear deterrent during the early years of the Cold War. Initially finished in an all-over white color scheme to protect the aircraft and their crews from the heat and flash of a nuclear explosion, the V-Force's aircraft could be scrambled in minutes in response to any Soviet attack. V-Bombers and their crews stood on constant alert until 1969 when the V- Force handed over its nuclear deterrent role to the Royal Navy's Polaris submarines.

Bagration to Berlin: The Final Air Battles in the East 1944-1945
***September 2008***
by C Bergström
Written by a leading expert in World War II air operations on the Eastern Front, this is the last in a quartet of books that together give total coverage of air battles in this theatre of war from 1941 to 1945. It details the final phase of air operations in the East from late 1943, and then covers the German defensive operations around the River Dnepr and the Sea of Azov in September 1943, and the subsequent German retreat and the air bridge to Cherkassy in early 1944. Final coverage is given to the major Soviet offensive against the Army Group Centre in mid-1944, the fall of Romania and the autumn battles in Poland, Courland, and on the Vistula, ending with the major Soviet winter offensive of early 1945 and the last-ditch battles over Berlin itself. The author's writing provides fantastic in-depth detail, and also tells the story from the viewpoints of both sides and from both strategic and tactical contexts. The book includes unique eyewitness material and many rare and previously unpublished photographs, 'biography boxes', plus data tables, technical assessments, and appendices.

Big Cat Diary: The Last Year of the Jaguar with 6 Squadron RAF
by J Sullivan
This book was conceived as a personal gift by the last commanding officer of an RAF Jaguar Squadron, to the personnel of Number 6 Squadron as a record, primarily through pictures, of their achievements in the final year of the Jaguar’s service. Now available more widely, this book nevertheless remains a very personal, and thus unique, perspective on the closing of a chapter in RAF history; the retirement from service of the Jaguar after 33 years of strong, dependable performance on the front-line of the RAF as a ground attack fighter.

The Jaguar is a very photogenic airplane, with a complementary blend of business-like angles and shapely curves. This book follows the Jaguar, and the personnel who supported her, through training in the UK and detachments overseas. The Jaguar was never more at home than when flying fast and low. Many of the images in this book were donated by the legions of aviation enthusiasts who had ample opportunity to capture her in her element.

The performance of the squadron in its last year remained strong to the very end, a testament to the dedication of the Jaguar Force personnel and their ‘Jaguar Spirit’. Enveloped in the cloak of ‘Jaguar Force Excellence’, they deserve the highest praise for their energy, commitment, and loyalty. This book is principally about them and for them, but also for all with an interest in aviation excellence to enjoy.

Bomber Units of the Luftwaffe 1933-45 V1
by H deZeng
During the interwar years, both in Britain and Germany, some believed that bombers could expand the battlefield to the home front of their opponents, damaging morale and disrupting the means of production. The German Blitzkrieg relied heavily on the Luftwaffe’s bomber force. From Spain to Barbarossa, the integration of the Kampfflieger forces into the overall strategy proved highly successful. However, once Germany was forced on the retreat, the tactics of the Luftwaffe’s bomber forces changed from offensive to defensive actions.

This is the first of two volumes providing highly detailed material on the organization of Luftwaffe bomber units in World War II. The books cover some 50 bomber Geschwader together with their component Staff flights and Gruppen. They also deal with formations, designations, and reorganizations through to the end of the war, with locations, bases, and transfers. The book also includes a comprehensive breakdown of theatres of operations, key battles, and aircraft types that were flown by each unit. The volumes have listings of commanders showing when and where they were in command. Each volume has numerous photos, many in color, depicting bombers in unit markings with close-ups of the unit emblems and badges.

Clear the Deck! Naval Aviation Accidents
by C Graff
Aircraft carrier operations were a dangerous business, especially in wartime. When air operations are confined to a flight deck of 50,000 square feet (escort carrier size), it was one of the most hectic and hazardous places on earth. Accidents were bound to happen. In wartime, the stakes were even higher as heavily loaded and armed combat planes went about their missions in unprecedented numbers. Commonly, there was no alternate airfield, no time to lose, and absolutely no room for error.

Clear the Deck! showcases many never-before-published amazing and dramatic World War II-era, U.S. Navy battle damage, accident, and flight operations photographs gathered from the National Archives, National Museum of Naval Aviation, the Seattle’s Museum of Flight, and numerous other collections.

This book features U.S. Naval aircraft in action from Eugene Ely to the Brewster Buffalo, to the ultimate fighters of World War II – Corsairs, Hellcats, Tigercats, and Bearcats – many coming to grief on pitching, rolling carrier decks. The action begins in the 1920s, heats up during the carrier battles of 1942-44, and concludes in the waters off the Japanese home islands as damaged fighters and torpedo bombers come back aboard ship – often times with disastrous consequences.

Experimental & Prototype Air Force Jet Fighters
by D Jenkins & T Landis
The United States Air Force was late in developing a jet fighter, definitely behind Germany and the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, a small number of Lockheed P-80 Shooting Stars did make it to the European and Mediterranean theaters of operations before VE Day, although they did not see combat. After the war, the sheer size of the U.S. aviation industry guaranteed that American fighters would soon dominate the skies.

However, the state of the art was advancing so fast that many development efforts never resulted in production aircraft; concepts that had seemed reasonable, even ideal, at the time were quickly overcome by newer and better technology. In the United States alone, several dozen different fighter designs made it to the prototype stage during the 1950s and 1960s.

In this book, Dennis R. Jenkins and Tony R. Landis look at the variety of different jet-fighter concepts developed by the U.S. Air Force after World War II. These pages cover all experimental and prototype jet fighters that made it to the hardware stage - design studies and “paper airplanes” are not discussed since other current books are dedicated to those subjects. The rationale for developing each aircraft is covered, along with a discussion of the technology needed to build it, its flight-test program, and the reasons it was cancelled or ordered into production. The text is derived mostly from official Air Force documents, and all of the aircraft are well covered photographically, usually with seldom-seen images showing them as they appeared during their flight-test program.

Farnborough and the Fleet Air Arm
***September 2008***
by G Cooper
This is a companion volume to Farnborough: 100 Years of British Aviation, by Peter Cooper, which was published in the summer of 2006. This book, however, concentrates on the activities of the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Aircraft/Aerospace Establishment at Farnborough. This department was perhaps the most demonstrative of all RAE centers of research; almost all its experimental work involved aircraft undergoing some full-scale activity in being launched or brought to rest (sometimes with extensive predictable damage). The author, a chartered engineer employed at RAE during 1936-46, has recorded the research activities of RAE as a center of worldwide aviation expertise. This comprehensive account covers the activities of the Naval Aircraft Department, previously the Catapult Section of the RAE, together with an overview of subsequent developments in the art and practice of 'Flying Navy'. This work introduced the provision of flightdeck machinery and equipment by the RAE for operating aircraft from ships at sea. This book describes in detail the engineering support given to decommissioning of HMS ARK Royal in 1978. It covers the invention and development of ship-borne catapults, accelerators, arrester gears, safety barriers, the angled deck, and visual landing aids – all British inventions, and adopted by foreign navies who currently operate fleet carriers. The book also includes details of experimental work in mechanically assisted launching of heavy bombers, flexible landing decks for undercarriageless aircraft, and arrester gear in the event of overshoot of airfields, including proposals for the Concorde.

Focke-Wulf Fw200 Condor
***Coming May 2009***
by J-C Salgado
This is a lavishly and highly detailed account of one of the most elegant and deadly aircraft to serve during World War II. Designed and built in the late 1930s, originally as a civilian airliner to compete with the American DC-2 and DC-3, the Fw 200 grabbed the international stage when it broke the record for flying non-stop from Berlin to New York in August 1938. However, it is for its role as a maritime strike aircraft in World War II that the Fw 200 gained its reputation as the 'Scourge of the Atlantic'. This book uncovers unique and unpublished material on this most revered aircraft of the Luftwaffe and will appeal to scale modelers and historians alike.

From Barbarossa to Odessa

From Barbarossa to Odessa
by E Hooton
This book covers the often overlooked involvement of World War II aircraft from Axis states other than Germany, such as the Romanians, who claimed a total of over 600 air victories, the Hungarians, the Slovaks, and even the Bulgarians. This makes the subject varied and of great interest, particularly because of the large variety of aircraft types employed by both sides, all of which are fully documented. Aided by a large number of previously unpublished photographs, the book tells the story of the campaign from both sides and provides detailed eyewitness accounts from individual pilots who were involved in the fighting. Besides day-to-day operations, appendices will contain comprehensive victory and loss lists.

From Barbarossa to Odessa - Part Two
by D Bernad & J Roba
From Barbarossa to Odessa: Part 2 is the second of two volumes on the air combat which took place on the southern flank of the Eastern Front following Operation Barbarossa. The period covered in this book saw the occupation of Bessarabia and southwest Ukraine and concluded when the Germans captured the area's regional capital, Odessa, on October 16, 1941. It was one of the most bitter and intensive air campaigns fought in the east, because local Soviet commanders had dispersed most of their assets in time, thus preventing their destruction on the ground. This gave them the ability to respond effectively to the combined Axis onslaught. Accordingly, the Red Air Force was able to achieve some of its greatest successes of 1941 in this little-studied campaign.

This book covers the often overlooked involvement of aircraft from Axis states other than Germany, such as the Romanians, who claimed a total of over 600 air victories, the Hungarians, the Slovaks, and even the Bulgarians. This makes the subject varied and of great interest, particularly because of the large variety of aircraft types employed by both sides, all of which are fully documented. Hypersonic - Revised Edition
by D Jenkins & T Landis
Nineteen years before Space Shuttle, the small, black, rocket-powered, bullet-shaped X-15 showed it was possible to fly into – and out of – space. There had never been anything like the X-15; it had a million-horsepower engine and could fly twice as fast as a rifle bullet. The X-15 set records that stood for years.

Specialty Press’s bestseller, Hypersonic, has been re-released in a new softbound format at a reduced price. This book is the most extensively researched history of the X-15 program yet produced. The book was written with the cooperation of surviving X-15 pilots as well as many other program principals and is based on six years of research in Air Force, NASA, and North American archives. It covers the tasks of converting and testing the B-52 carrier airplanes, building the first full-pressure suits to protect the pilot, building the first engineering mission simulators, acquiring the remote lakebed landing sites, and building the radar range. It also covers the flight program in detail, including the most authoritative flight log ever assembled; in many instances, information in this log was derived from the original flight data recordings.

Also covered are each of the experiments that were flown aboard the X-15 late in its career when it became the workhorse of the space program, carrying such things as startrackers destined for the Apollo program and missile detection systems that would later be sent into orbit on satellites.

Compiled by one of the world's leading experts on the subject of the air war over the Eastern Front, Christer Bergström, Kursk: The Air Battle, is the third in a series of books covering the major phases of the air war in this theatre of operations. It will be required reading for all historians of the Luftwaffe during World War II and those with a specific interest in the Eastern Front in particular.

The German 'Kursk' offensive, 'Operation Zitadelle,' was launched on July 4, 1943. Strong Soviet defense ensured that the Germans failed to make their planned breakthrough and, after three weeks, defense was turned to attack by the Soviets, as two counter-attacks saw the Red Army seize the initiative and ultimately force the Germans to retreat. During the month of August, Soviet forces recaptured strategic cities such as Oryol, Belgorod, and Kharkov. This book provides a detailed history of the air battles that were a part of this operation.

To date, no single study has been written in English on the air aspects of the battle in which, literally, thousands of aircraft were pitted against each other. The strength of the author's writing lies in its detail, his ability to tell the story from the viewpoints of both sides, and from both strategic and tactical contexts. There is also much unique eye-witness material and the text will be accompanied by a large number of rare and previously unpublished photographs, 'biography boxes', plus data tables, technical assessments, and appendices.

Luftwaffe at War 2

Luftwaffe at War Volume 2: Blitzkrieg in the West 1939-1940
by Y Gordon & D Komissarov
In the second title in this new series, author Edward Hooton examines the period between the victory over Poland in 1939 and the crushing defeats of Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Norway, and Denmark during the dark days of 1940 when, ultimately, Britain alone was left undefeated. As in the Polish campaign, the Luftwaffe's role was pivotal. It won air superiority over the theatre of operations and was able to destroy much of the enemy's material before the army swept forward.

Luftwaffe at War 3

Luftwaffe at War Volume 3: Kanalkampf' 1940-1945
by Y Gordon
In this third volume in the series, aviation historian Edward Hooton examines the period of the German victory over France in 1940, the Battle of Britain, the subsequent blitz on British cities, and the raids and forays which continued up to 1943. As in earlier campaigns, the role of the Luftwaffe was to obtain air superiority over the theatre of operations. The book examines in detail how close the Luftwaffe came to achieving this objective in the battles of the autumn of 1940.

Luftwaffe Colours 1935 – 1945
by M. Ullman
Much has been written about the Luftwaffe, but no aspect has been more controversial than the question of camouflage and markings of the aircraft. Here, author Michael Ullmann follows the development and use of many colors and establishes the links betwen the then-standard RAL colors and those adopted by the German Air Ministry. He reveals how and why these finishes were developed and applied to both military and Lufthansa aircraft. Supplemented by more than 300 photographs, drawings, detailed color aircraft profiles, and a highly accurate chart of real paint chips, Luftwaffe Colours 1935-1945 presents a remarkable insight into the art of World War II German camouflage markings.

Luftwaffe Eagle
***Coming December 2008***
by W. Schuck
This is the autobiography of Luftwaffe pilot Walter Schuck, who flew the Me109 in the Arctic Sea fighter squadrons, becoming the Russian air force's feared enemy in the far north. Awarded the Knights Cross in April 1944, he claimed his 100th kill in June of that year, then barely 48 hours later shot down 12 aircraft in one day - a record never achieved by any other Arctic Sea pilot. He took command of the third Staffel of JG 7, and his success in the aerial theatre was unsurpassed when he brought down four B-17 bombers while on a transit flight. Shortly afterwards, meeting one of the bombers' escort fighters in combat, his fuel system exploded and he had to bail out. Walter Schuck's war was over, after more than 500 front-line sorties and 206 confirmed kills. In a gripping narrative, the author helps us to understand why he and his colleagues were prepared to lay down their lives for their people and their country.

Luftwaffe Fighters & Fighter-Bombers Over Far North
***August 2008***
by K Aakra
The Luftwaffe’s campaign in Scandinavia and the Far North – the Eismeerfront – from 1940 to 1945 can still be regarded as largely ‘uncharted territory’ in terms of historical research. Air operations over the Far North were demanding and intensive, with the two main German fighter units, JG 5 and JG 77, engaged against both the RAF and the Russians. Lesser-known units also took part, and this book examines all these units’ aircraft, many of which were engaged in attacking British and Soviet-held aircraft, airfields, bridges, communications lines and transport, as well as enemy maritime targets throughout the area. The main emphasis of the book is on camouflage and markings, but it also details the structure and organization of the units as well as operations, losses and accidents, and includes information on the senior and junior commanders involved. Focusing on the Luftwaffe fighter force in Denmark, northern Finland and Norway, the authors have spent many years collecting information and photographs for this exhaustive study. Much of the photographic material reveals a treasure-trove of fascinating, previously unseen and often unknown ‘fact-busting’ material that will appeal to the military and aviation enthusiast as well as historians.

Magnesium Overcast - Revised Edition
by D Jenkins
The Convair B-36 “Peacemaker” was the ultimate statement of American air power at the beginning of the Cold War. An intriguing mix of proven World War II concepts and 1950s high-tech innovations, the aircraft would spark more controversy than any weapon system ever built until the ill-fated Star Wars system of the late 1980s.

Extensive research at various archives around the country have uncovered new and previously unpublished details about the B-36 and its derivatives. Among these are the first-ever photos of the never-flown second prototype YB-60 all-jet version, details about Convair’s flying-boat version of the XC-99 cargo aircraft, and technical information of the stillborn Variable Discharge Turbine B-36C variant.

Includes extensive photographic coverage of the devastating 1952 Texas tornado that severally damaged and grounded a good portion of the B-36 fleet. A detailed serial number list covers each airplane and its final disposition, and a chapter covers the efforts to reclaim and scrap the aircraft as they were taken out of service.

Me 262 Volume 3
by R Smith & E Creek
This reprint of Me 262 Volume Three continues J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek's detailed analysis of the world's first operational jet fighter and fighter-bomber. This book covers the night war waged by the Me 262 against the threat of the British Mosquito over Berlin in 1945: “I had caught a Mosquito illuminated in the searchlights at about 8,500 meters. However, because I had not managed to maneuver my Me 262 into the proper position, the rapid closing speed forced me to break off before I could finish my attack. With a top speed of 850 km/h, I was much faster than the Mosquito in front of me. I contacted the fighter controller by radio, asking him to keep the Mosquito illuminated. Then, I tried making a full turn to keep the enemy aircraft at the correct distance for a second attack.” Also included is a day-by-day account of the Me 262's role in the daylight defense of the Third Reich. The authors have drawn extensively from the personal accounts of both German and Allied pilots as well as thousands of archive documents: “These guys came up so fast that we never knew what hit us. My aircraft was badly hit in the engine and port wing by cannon shells, and I was about to bail out when it seemed that the aircraft was still flyable. Lt. Florine's P-38 was not hit and he spent the next few minutes keeping the two jets off my back by diving into them each time they tried to close and finish me. Like my aircraft, his was unarmed. There is little doubt that he risked his own life to save mine.” Following more than 30 years of research, Me 262 Volume Three forms part of the most comprehensive account of the Luftwaffe's revolutionary jet fighter ever published.

Messerschmitt Bf 110 C, D and E An Illustrated Study: Variants • Weapons • Equipment
by J Vasco
The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was the Luftwaffe’s prime multi-role heavy fighter. By the time Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, ten Luftwaffe Gruppen had been equipped with this heavy fighter. However, as a long-range escort fighter, the Bf 110C received a disastrous mauling at the hands of the more nimble Hurricane and Spitfire during the "Battle of Britain". Rather than protecting the bombers under escort, the Bf 110C formations usually found that they were hard-pressed to defend themselves, and the farcical situation developed in which single-seat Bf 109E fighters were having to afford protection to the escort fighters. The complete failure of the Bf 110C in the role for which it had been conceived led to its eventual withdrawal from the Channel coast but did not result in any reduction in its production priority. Author John Vasco has researched a wealth of new material on the B, C, D and E variants of this aircraft, including many previously unpublished photographs and high-quality artwork and color profiles. This detailed examination of the aircraft will be an invaluable work of reference to historians and modelers of the Bf 110.

MiG-21

Mikoyan MiG-21
by Y Gordon & K Dexter w/D Komissarov
First flown in 1956 and entering service in 1959, the MiG-21 ‘Fishbed’ has proved to be one of the most successful of all Soviet era jet fighters, seeing service not only with the Soviet air force but with numerous other air forces worldwide. Among jet fighters, theMiG-21 holds a wide range of records covering total production figures and the number of nations that operated it. For the first time this book will provide a detailed description of every single member of the MiG-21 family, from the Ye-2 swept-wing development aircraft to the latest ‘distant relatives’ of the ‘Fishbed’ developed in China. The book covers the MiG-21’s combat career, including the Vietnam War, the Arab-Israeli conflicts, the Indo-Pakistani clashes, and various local wars in Africa. Also included are the fleet lists for each operator featuring known serials and construction numbers. A separate well-illustrated chapter will deal with the Chinese derivatives that were supplied to Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Iraq, Iran, and other nations. For many years the Soviet designers deemed the MiG-21 to be the best light fighter in its category – until a Northrop F-5E Freedom Fighter captured in Vietnam found its way to the Soviet Union and met the MiG-21 in mock combat. The book details results of this ‘flyoff’, which came as a rude awakening for Soviet pilots and designers. Today, upgraded MiG-21s with state-of-the-art avionics still serve with the air arms of Romania.

Military Aircraft of the 1970s
by G Manning
The 1970s were a time of radical change for military aviation enthusiasts. At the start of the decade, the U.S. was still heavily involved in Vietnam and vast numbers of military aircraft were stationed in Europe, on both sides of the Iron Curtain. By the end of the decade, the Vietnam War was over and the first stirrings of Détente were in the air. Following the oil crises, the global economy teetered on the edge of recession and many countries, such as Britain, were faced with uncomfortable questions about the size and cost of their defense establishments, which led to the gradual elimination of many older types.

Despite these changes, throughout the 1970s, many classic designs were still operational around the globe and new types and variants were still being developed. This sequel to author Gerry Manning’s earlier and well-received Military Aircraft of the 1960s, records the great variety of aircraft types and camouflage schemes that were visible during this fascinating decade. The book is a visual delight and an exercise in pure nostalgia for all those who had an interest in military aviation during these years.

Northrop's Night Hunter: P-61 Blk Widow: The P-61 Black Widow
***October 2008***
by J Kolln
World War II changed the face of warfare forever. Now enemies were fighting and flying all night, which mandated that a fighter be developed that could carry a new technological invention aloft - radar. Guided by ground stations toward the target, the P-61 would acquire an enemy aircraft with its on-board radar and close for the kill. Northrop's Night Hunter covers the development history of the P-61 Black Widow and the radar built specifically for its use. The P-61 was the most successful Allied night fighter of the war, and flew combat in the China-Burma-India, European, and Pacific theaters of the war. This book details the aircraft's o
